BIOS

MARY ANN COONEY

Mary Ann Cooney, currently Director of the Division of Public Health Services, has held positions in both acute and primary health care, as well as local and state public health. She received her baccalaureate in nursing from Saint Anselm College, a Master of Science in Nursing Administration from University of New Hampshire , and will be completing the Master of Public Health program at the University of New Hampshire . Before her appointment in December 2003, Mary Ann was the NH Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Community and Public Health, Administrator for Chronic Disease Prevention. Prior to coming to the NH Department of Health and Human Services, Mary Ann spent 16 years in local public health and 11 years as the Supervisor of School Health for the Manchester Public Health Department. She is a member of several professional organizations and is past president of the NH Public Health Association. She was awarded the NH Nurses Association Nurse of the Year in 1995 and was appointed and held a seat on the American Nurses Association National Test Credentialing Committee from 1993- 1999. In 2005, she received credentialing from the National Public Health Leadership Institute.

ELLIOT FISHER

Dr. Elliot Fisher is the Professor of Medicine and of Community and Family Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School . He education includes: Harvard Medical School , MD 1981, Harvard University , BA 1974 and U. Washington, MPH 1985. Professional Interests: Dr. Fisher is also a general internist at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, Vermont where he co-directs the VA Outcomes Group, a research and training program for physicians. His research interests lie in three areas. First, he has worked to clarify the limitations of administrative databases and develop methods to overcome them. Second, he has developed approaches to resource allocation based upon the principles of benchmarking, first as a means of addressing inequities in the levels of hospital resources across communities in Oregon and more recently as applied to the U.S. physician supply. Most recently, he has focused on the health implications of the uneven distribution of health care resources. His current research, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, examines the potential adverse consequences of increasing capacity in health care.

 

PAUL SPIESS

Paul Spiess served as the health policy advisor to Governor John Lynch, is a member of the executive team of the Citizens Health Initiative, and leads the finance and information technology team. From 2000 to 2004, Mr. Spies was a member of the New Hampshire Legislature, where he served on the Commerce Committee. He joined the Legislature after completing a 25 year career in banking, retiring in 1997 as Executive Vice President and Chief Operation Officer of CFX Bank of Keene .

From 1983 to 1993, he was founder, President, and Chief Executive Officer of Colonial Mortgage Inc. Prior to that Mr. Spiess was President of First NH Banks Mortgage Company. Mr. Speiss is a founder and Director of Centrix Bank and President of Souhegan Valley Interfaith Housing Corporation. He was recently elected as a director of the Endowment for Health and is a past member of the board of the Manchester Regional Community Foundation and the Norris and Elizabeth Bean Foundation. Mr. Spiess earned a bachelor's degree from Colby College in government and an M.B.A. in finance from Boston University .

 

JIM SQUIRES

Dr. Squires was born and raised in New London , New Hampshire . After graduating from McGill Medical School in 1963, he spent his one-year internship in surgery at the Grace- New Haven Hospital in New Haven , Connecticut . Dr. Squires then served two years in the United States Air Force as a flight medical officer, completed four more years of surgical training at the New England Medical Center , and taught surgery for one year at the Boston Veterans Administration Hospital .

In 1971, Dr. Squires and his family moved to Hollis , New Hampshire , where he still resides and has been serving as the Town Moderator for nearly twenty years. After moving to Hollis, Dr. Squires was instrumental in establishing the Matthew Thornton Health Plan, New Hampshire 's first HMO. While serving in a variety of administrative roles at Matthew Thornton, Dr. Squires also practiced general and vascular surgery.

In 1994 Dr. Squires received the "Physician of the Year Award" from the New Hampshire Hospital Association. In 1996, following his retirement, he was elected to the New Hampshire Senate. After re-election in 1998, Dr. Squires was appointed chair of the Public Institutions, Health, and Human Services Committee. He has been recognized for his efforts to ensure that tobacco settlement funds be used for health-related causes. In 2000, Dr. Squires sought the Republican nomination for Governor and finished second in the primaries.

In January, 2001, Dr. Squires became the first president of the Endowment for Health. This position allows him to use his vast and varied experience to provide leadership and guidance to this new foundation.
In 1960 Dr. Squires married his childhood sweetheart, Jessica Austin Squires whose faithful support has made the above achievements possible. Dr. and Mrs. Squires have four children and five grandchildren and continue to reside in Hollis.

 

ANNA THOMAS

As the Community Epidemiologist and Administrator of the Community Epidemiology and Disease Prevention Division at the City of Manchester Department of Health, Anna Thomas is responsible for working with the community in the conduct of public health research and community assessments to measure, design, direct and evaluate health improvement efforts on the local level. Ann a holds a BA from UNH and a Graduate Certificate at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, one of twenty national scholarship recipients from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She also holds a Masters from Dartmouth Medical School 's Center for Clinical Evaluative Sciences. Ann a was a Major and Commissioned Medical Service Corps Officer in the NH Army National Guard for 16 years. She currently serves on several Boards and coalitions throughout the City and was the recipient of the Smoke Free NH 's Merit Award. Ann a was most recently selected as one of NH's “40 Under Forty” by the Union Leader. She resides in Loudon with her husband, John, young son, “JJ” and dog, Duke.
